Frequently Asked Questions About Lenny
Who is Lenny?
Lenny is a beautiful, cheeky, incredibly strong little boy who lives with complex medical needs following a hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) injury at birth.
He is loved endlessly by his mum and dad, his brother Archie, his sister Dollie, and a huge circle of family and friends who adore him.
Lenny may face challenges every day, but he also brings joy, laughter, cuddles, and a level of strength that inspires everyone around him.
What is HIE?
HIE stands for Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy.
This is a type of brain injury caused by a lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain around the time of birth.
Every child with HIE is different. Some children recover well, while others, like Lenny, are left with lifelong disabilities and complex medical needs.
What conditions does Lenny have?
Lenny has quadriplegic spastic cerebral palsy as a result of his HIE injury.
This affects:
Movement and muscle control
Communication
Mobility
Feeding
Breathing and respiratory health
Day-to-day independence
He also requires ongoing medical care and support.
Can Lenny walk or talk?
Lenny is non-verbal and non-mobile.
Even though he cannot communicate in the way many children do, he still has his own personality, preferences, emotions, and ways of connecting with the people who love him.
His smiles, expressions, sounds, and reactions say more than words ever could.
How is Lenny fed?
Lenny is fed through an NG tube (nasogastric tube).
This helps him safely receive:
Nutrition
Fluids
Medication
Feeding difficulties are common in children with complex neurological conditions.
Why does Lenny spend time in hospital?
Children with complex needs are often more vulnerable to illnesses, particularly respiratory infections.
Lenny has experienced serious chest infections including pneumonia and partially collapsed lungs, which have required long hospital stays and respiratory support such as Vapotherm oxygen therapy.
Hospital stays can be physically and emotionally exhausting for the whole family.
What is Vapotherm?
Vapotherm is a type of high-flow oxygen therapy.
It delivers warm, humidified oxygen to help children breathe more comfortably and keep their oxygen levels stable.
For Lenny, Vapotherm has been used during severe respiratory illness to help support his breathing while his body recovers.
Does Lenny understand what is happening around him?
Yes.
Although children with severe disabilities can sometimes be underestimated, Lenny absolutely experiences comfort, love, distress, familiarity, and connection.
He knows the voices of the people who love him most.
He responds to cuddles, music, touch, and reassurance.
He is very much present in his own way.
How does this affect the family?
Caring for a medically complex child affects every part of family life.
There are hospital stays, sleepless nights, appointments, therapies, emergencies, medications, equipment, and constant worry.
But there is also fierce love.
Lenny’s mum and dad work tirelessly to give him the best life possible, while his brother Archie and sister Dollie have shown incredible patience, resilience, and love throughout everything the family faces together.
They are a team, even on the hardest days.
What does Lenny enjoy?
Lenny loves comfort, familiar voices, cuddles, music, and being surrounded by the people who love him.
Like any child, he has good days, grumpy days, sleepy days, and days where his smile can light up an entire room like someone switched the sun back on.
